5 Foolproof Ways to Overcome Burnout

, | Aug 17, 2021

In 2014, I was working in a senior living facility as the assistant executive director. I was responsible for the resident contracts, overseeing food services, activities, and human resources. I worked about 60 hours per week, was yelled at by executive leadership (literally yelled), and was stressed out of my mind.

One day the COO came is huffing and puffing about various things criticizing everyone and everything, then stated we would not be leaving the facility until all the resident contracts were in order again. She literally held us hostage in the building until 9pm and I started working at 7:30am.

That was about 4 months into the work and within about 2-months I gave notice. Unfortunately, the toll the burnout took on my body was severe. Leaving me with various pains all over my body (no other reasonable explanation for why these began).

Burnout is terrible and the COO was a terrible leader. If you read my previous article on burnout, now I want to give you 5 tips on how to overcome it.

How to Overcome Burnout

Your ability to give and not burn out can be analogous to a cup of water. Those who are dealing with burnout have poured out and emptied just about all they can give. Those who have learned how to create balance know that it is better to be like a cup of water that is overflowing than one that is emptying out.

Which means you need to have an abundance of ways to fill up. Below is a list that has worked for many people.

Eat well and exercise.
There are many studies that have shown the link between a healthy lifestyle and a happier life. You will often feel more refreshed after eating food with healthy ingredients, like fruits and vegetables, or exercising.

Make sure you eat well and exercise on the job too. Bring a healthy lunch and snacks. Get up and walk around for a bit every hour. Don’t stay seated all day and make sure to pay attention to your posture.

Sleep more.

This is one of the most challenging parts of beating burnout, but it truly does help to sleep more. If you’ve been getting less than 7 hours of sleep for a long period of time, it might be time to change your habits!

By the way, if you work from home, it’s okay to take a quick 5-10 minute nap. I literally get out of my office chair grab a pillow from the couch in the other room and set a 10-15 minute timer. If you can’t do this. Practice meditative breathing.

Treat yourself every now and then.

Take some time out of your day to do something for yourself – it can be something small like taking an ice cream break or something bigger like buying that new dress, widget, or ticket to a show.

It’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of life and forget that you deserve a break. One way to do this is to create daily rituals. These are things like having an afternoon tea, taking a yoga class after work or at lunchtime, meditating for a few minutes every morning, or creating an evening ritual of reading a book before bed.

Remember others depend on you.
When burnout starts to overtake your leadership and life, these people miss out on the best version of you. When you apply these ideas to help you overcome burnout, you will be helping yourself AND others.

Your mental health matters
Take care of your mental health too! Make sure that you are taking the necessary steps in maintaining healthy mental habits like relaxation or meditation. A lifelong benefit that my clients receive from my coaching is the work we do on their mindsets which in turn produces tremendous results for their mental health.

Conclusion
It’s difficult to think of yourself when you are feeling burn out. You are too busy getting burned by all the fires and trying to put them out instead of taking care of yourself. But much like the oxygen mask on an airplane, the best way to take care of those around you is to take care of yourself first. Don’t pour out, overflow!
If you want to spend some time brainstorming on how to make this possible in the midst of all that you are doing, let’s schedule a call and figure out a strategy that works for you.
