Determining The What, Where, and How Of Business Development

We all know it’s a good idea to step back and take a look at the state of your business. But doing this can be a daunting task. This stepping back got me to rethink my business and what it stood for.

At first, Gillette Solutions was about doing assessments. Then it was about hiring. Then about team building. Most recently, my focus turned to business analytics. But ultimately, what I’m Gillette Solutions is about three simple questions.

If you are running a business, starting a business, or working for a business I have a concept and tool that I believe will change the way you do business development. It starts with 3 simple questions. These questions can fundamentally change the way your business grows.

The first question determines where your business currently stands when it comes to overall performance (not just finances).

Where Are We With This Business?

We all need a great foundation. To get to an understanding of how healthy our business currently is we must ask the first simple question “where am I?”. Where am I in this business? What is the current state of health and development for this business and it’s employees?

The best way to answer this question is not to look at the finances, but to look at 5 Key Performance Areas. These KPIs are culture, leadership, operations, customer service, and training. Most of an organization’s financial successes or problems are tied to it’s health in these areas.

Through Gillette Solutions, I provide a simple company-wide survey called the Performance Gap Indicator to determine the health of your business in the 5 areas mentioned above (finances are not included on purpose). This is the answer to the first question.

With a foundation established, we can ask the next question.

Where Do We Want To Go With This Business?

If we understand where we are in the 5 areas of our business, now we can move to the dreaming phase!

The question becomes, “Where do we want to go?” in these areas. The results of the survey will reveal the gaps in the areas of culture, leadership, operations, training, and customer service. From these gaps, we can quickly and easily determine where the business can go.

These powerful insights provide the clarity needed to answer this simple question. No more guessing about the state of your business or what to focus on for the fall quarter. It’s right there in the survey results.

Now we can begin to focus on a strategic plan to get to where we want to go.

How Do We Get There As A Business?

Ah, yes. This is the hard part. The survey is easy. It will only take ten minutes of you and your employees’ day. It’s the actions that take you from here to there that are far more challenging and time-consuming.

The beauty of these questions is in their simplicity. When we look at where the business is and know where it can go, clarity on strategy is the result.

With this process in place, measurable progress can be seen. Strategies can be deployed and their effectiveness will be evident.

So how do we get there? We have to start by understanding where we are right now with the business.
